Experts first detected a strain of Streptococcus, which in the mouth of a man «opposed» to other microorganisms — Streptococcus mutans. The latter, as it turned out, play a significant role in the formation of dental caries in humans — they emit large amounts of acid called agrinon damaging the enamel of human teeth, allowing other bacteria to settle in micro cracks of the tooth and contribute to its further destruction.

As reported on the website of the University, the bacterium, at the moment, which received the designation «A12», prevents the growth of Streptococcus mutans and neutralize emissions of Agrinion. The study showed that A12 in some cases quite effectively protected against caries even people not pay enough attention to oral hygiene.

Professionals and before it was known that the caries in humans occurs as a result of acid-alkaline balance in the mouth. Also, experts knew that the key role in this process is played by bacteria. And if some species of a «villains» (including Streptococcus mutans), the bacteria-«heroes» experts still could not.

Scientists hope in the future to create a medicine that could take increase caries people, to encourage reproduction and the bacteria A12
